Tourists, Waterford Crystal, the Millennium Plaza and dog fouling
IT’S good news that the revamped Waterford Crystal will open in June located in the old ESB offices on the Mall.
If the record of the old factory is anything to go by it will bring thousands of visitors to Waterford City centre with their much needed spending power.
However, it will take more than Waterford Crystal to make their visit a worthwhile experience. We need to ensure there are enough other attractions to entertain the visitors and keep them here for a few days at least.
It’s good that the shops will open late during the summer months and a comprehensive schedule of summer festivals has been produced by city council.
This will all help but using the river and the Millennium Plaza to its best advantage must be a key objective too. It’s really beautiful and relaxing any evening to stroll along the river from the bridge to the Tower Hotel, but one of the most off-putting things is to see the amount of dog fouling along that particular area.
Over the years I’ve seen many families with young children walking along here and constantly having to avoid dogs’ dirt. It’s quite disgusting and I’m certain our visitors find it very offending too. This whole stretch in particular of the river walk should be constantly cleaned by city council and litter wardens patrolling it regularly to deter dog fouling.
The plaza itself is a magnificent asset and regular events should be organised there throughout June, July and August. Bands such as City of Waterford Brass, Barrack St Band, Thomas Francis Meagher and the Pipe Bands I’m sure would love the opportunity to entertain the locals and visitors on a regular basis. Add in the various bands on the music scene, along with some new and upcoming bands who would love the chance to practise and perform in public, you have a very interesting mix of entertainment on the Plaza throughout those critical tourist months. Food stalls, craft stalls etc should be facilitated and encouraged to set up along the walk providing a continental atmosphere to the whole experience.
This mix combined with the hotels, bars and shops along the quay doing their bit too will give everyone good reason to enjoy one of the best riverside locations available anywhere in the country.
We can’t just wait for a general economic upturn, we must look to ourselves first to kick start the local economy and make Waterford a vibrant city to live in and to visit. Utilizing the riverside and the plaza to its full potential is just one way of making Waterford the place to visit during the summer months and generate much needed revenue, promote job creation and a sense of pride of place.
We have a great city, in a wonderful location, let’s make full use of it.
