Mother claims girl (2) abducted
By Mary Ellen Breen

GARDAI were in the dark in relation to an alleged kidnapping of a two-year-old girl in the Ferrybank area on Friday, despite the fact that a mother claimed she reported the incident and that the Gardaí brought her child home.

The young mother (24), who does not wish to be identified, told of her relief on Friday afternoon, after her two-year-old daughter was returned, following an incident in which she said she was presumed snatched from the back garden and was missing for over an hour before Gardaí brought her home.

She told the Waterford News & Star that she had been mopping up the kitchen floor while her daughter played in the back garden. When she went outside to squeeze out her mop she realise the toddler was not in the garden. After searching the house she said she panicked and rang the gardaí.

"I was out of my mind. I have lived here all my life and always felt safe here. My heart was in my mouth, she won’t be allowed out in the back anymore. I feel I’ve lost my privacy, it’s horrible. All I kept thinking was that it could have been like Madeleine McCann," the relieved mum said.

She said her child was not the sort that would wander off. "She is not a child to stray, she is always stuck on me."

She said the child was checked over by Gardaí and, despite crying when they were reunited, was fine.

She said it was her brother who spotted the child and Gardaí returned her to her home, having picked her up in another estate.

Both Waterford and Ferrybank Garda Station said they had no information on the incident, while the Garda Press Office confirmed that no complaint was ever received.
