Hurlers off to a league flyer with demolition of Dubs
THE game itself was nothing to write home about, but the result was the all important issue at Walsh Park last Sunday when Davy’s boys entertained Anthony Daly’s Dubs in the opening round of the National Hurling League.
No arguing either with a 4-13 to 0-12 victory scoreline that was far more comprehensive than any of us could ever have imagined or indeed hoped for.
Sadly the day was not all about the game itself or the final result. Dublin’s best forward, Alan McCrabbe, picked up a horrible second half injury in a wholly accidental clash with Jamie Nagle, and with the game held up for the best part of a quarter of an hour the player was eventually removed by ambulance to Waterford Regional Hospital.
As I write the full extent of his injury isn’t known, but the hope of every fan will be that it is considerably less serious than it looked and that the flying Dub will be back on the field of play much sooner than later.
The game itself on a splendid Walsh Park surface was pedestrian and even drab at times. No fault of our fellows let it be said because they went about their business in admirable and workmanlike fashion, and they had our highly vaunted visitors beaten up a gum tree long before the final whistle confirmed our thirteen point win.
There is so much by way positivity that Davy Fitz can take from this one, not least the eagerness of every player and the determination to get a result on the board. The returning Noel Connors was absolutely brilliant at left fullback and alongside him newcomers Liam Lawlor and Jerome Meagher never put a foot wrong.
“Brick’’ was as commanding as ever at centre back and his flankers, Declan Prendergast and Jamie Nagle completed what on the day was a fine all round defensive performance.
Elsewhere too there was much to be pleased about, not least the drive and tenacity of Kevin Moran who finished with a personal tally of 1-5—all from play. Need one say more? Maurice Shanahan, apart altogether from his unerring freetaking accuracy, is continuing to impress in general play, and if Shane Walsh didn’t set the scene alight this time as he has done in earlier games the way he took his second half goal confirmed just how important a player he is in this panel.
Still no Eoin Kelly next Sunday when we travel West to play Galway in what truly will be the team’s biggest test todate, but the other Eoin, McGrath, will be available having served is four week ban.
Incidentally Davy tells me that most of the more senior members who are presently “doing their own thing’’ away from the main panel will be available for selection consideration inside the next fortnight. Won’t that making team selection rather interesting? You can bet your last euro that it will.
Well done then to one and all on such a fine and emphatic victory last Sunday. It couldn’t have kick-started our league campaign in a more convincing way.
