Sheridan’s lone goal wins it for Crystal
BY PAUL ELLIOTT

SOUTHEND UTD 0 WAT CRYSTAL 1
Waterford Crystal took all three points in this Premier League clash at Southend.

Keith Sheridan scored the only goal of the game to give his side victory as Crystal on look forward to their FAI Junior Cup clash against Ballymun United in Dublin on Sunday next.

Although Crystal came away with a well earned win they will be concerned about the injury to star striker Paul Quilty, the Crystal man had to leave the game at half-time as he picked up a heavy knock to his instep and it will be touch and go if he will be fit enough start it Dublin next week.

Southend started well and Danny Murphy had a chance on five minutes. Murphy burst into the box as he passed Johnny Gleeson but he dragged his shot wide of the Crystal goal. At the other end Crystal broke on the counter attack and Liam Coady played in Robbie Butler but his right foot was well saved by Southend keeper Sean Walsh.

On 20 minutes Crystal were on the attack again, this time Paul Quilty beat the offside trap but after going past Sean Walsh he drove his effort over the crossbar. Half way into the first-half Crystal upped the ante and forced three corners kicks in a row as the Southend defence came under strong pressure.

The Southend back four held firm with Michael Caulfield and Lee Russell outstanding. Just before half-time Southend had a chance to take the lead as they got behind the Crystal defence. Darren White burst clear but he delayed his shot and Conor Fell got back to clear the danger.

Crystal then lost Paul Quilty and Robbie Butler to injury at half-time and they had to reorganise their attack with Jason Halloran and Alan Ryan joining the action.

The second-half saw little in the way of goalmouth action as the battle was mainly fought in the middle of the park. Crystal had a couple of half chances but Sean Walsh saved well from Martin Tynan and Keith Sheridan. Southend then introduced Paddy Barrett, Lee Hayes and Craig Keane as they went in search of the opening goal, however it was Crystal who snatched the vital goal with eight minutes left on the clock.

Andrew Power and Martin Tynan combined wide on the left and when the cross came in Southend were caught flat footed and Keith Sheridan stole in at the far post to blast the ball into the net from ten yards.

MUNSTER JUNIOR CUP
CARRICK UNITED 3 FERRYBANK 0

Carrick lost Michael Coady to a red card only minutes into the game and then Hugh Mullaley in the Ferrybank goal saved a penalty from Wayne Fitzgerald.

Ian Cleary opened the scoring for Carrick with a free kick from the edge of the box, Keith Walsh then made it two nil. Anthony Power added the third as a rampant Carrick remain unbeaten this season.

DUNGARVAN 0 TRAMORE 2
