BY GER LAWTON

With anyone with even the slightest interest in National Hunt racing, then the next six weeks are all about the countdown to the Cheltenham Festival which kicks off this year on March 16.

To that end, Cheltenham Preview night’s have always been very popular events to whet the appetite for the big meeting and it’s great news that a the racing mad heartland of West Waterford is now about to get its very own preview night, one which promises to be a wonderful event.

First things first, the event is being organised and will benefit the development plans of Lismore GAA club. It will take place on Sunday, February 21 at the Park Hotel in Dungarvan and the tape will come up at 7.30pm.

The organising committee have left no stone unturned in putting together a wonderful panel of experts for the night, who are sure to mark your card with plenty of inside information to help you to back plenty of winners at this year’s festival.

The panel is: top Irish National Hunt jockey and Youghal man, Davy Russell; former multiple amateur champion and now trainer, Philip Fenton; one of the top jockeys of the all time, a man who recently became only the second ever rider to break the 2,000 winner mark, Richard Johnson; another experienced and well regarded UK jockey, Andrew Tinkler, well-known and respected local bookmaker, Noel Cummins and Gordon Clarkson who will be known to many West Waterford racing people, a brilliant racing statistician, who is currently the assistant trainer to Richard Phillips. MC on the night will be Lismore jockey, Ken Whelan.

Admission is just €10, which will include a €5 free bet on the Cheltenham Festival courtesy of Paddy Power. Tickets are available from any committee member, from Dungarvan Park Hotel and in the city at Ken McGrath’s Sports Shop, O’Connell Street.
