Nine men Bohs refuse to lie down
BY ADRIAN FLANAGAN
VILLA 1 BOHEMIANS 2 A spectacular piece of vision from Bohemians defender David Whittle saw his side return to winning ways in extraordinary fashion against Villa after an amazing Premier league contest at Connor’s Park on Saturday night last.
Whittle found the net with a free kick from all of 50 yards on 76 minutes as the nine men from Ben Wadding Park somehow managed to take all three points and for manager Clem Fanning, he would be delighted about the way his side battled and fought throughout the second half.
After also withstanding a total of eight second half minutes of injury time, nobody could take anything away from the victors as they kept on battling following the dismissals of Leo Jacques and Gerry Connors in the space of two first half minutes.
Villa lacked ideas going forward with the extra players and they’ll be very disappointed that they managed to lose and also about the manner of the winning goal, which must go down as a piece of kamikaze goalkeeping from Dean Purcell, who just shouldn’t have been beaten from that distance.
But credit Whittle for the vision to see Purcell in no man’s land inside his six-yard box and Bohemians capitalised on this and held out for a famous win against all the odds, however that said, they were never threatened by a home side that lacked creativity.
After both Stephen Murphy and Ian Cantwell had half chances for the home side early in the first half, they found themselves a goal behind on 22 minutes and it came courtesy of a brilliant David Kennedy strike from 25 yards after he picked up a Kevin Whittle pass before beating Purcell with a superb right-footed effort.
The lead lasted less than two minutes when Des Mullett found Paul Omoteso with a throw from the right and after a superb first touch, his right-footed strike from the edge of the penalty gave former Waterford hurling great and Bohemians goalkeeper Paul Flynn no chance whatsoever.
Bohemians were reduced to ten men on 36 minutes when Leo Jacques saw red for two yellow cards in the same incident.
After he was clearly fouled by Kenny Purcell near the touchline, referee Tony Walsh failed to spot and award a free kick leading Jacques to take his frustration out at the referee and after been booked for dissent, he kept his outburst going and yellow was quickly followed by red.
It seemed as if things were going to get out of hand from the resulting drop ball and after Gerry Connors let his feeling known to the referee, he followed Jacques into the dressing room and it also resulted in a yellow card for Bohemians defender David Whittle as things on the field began to get out of hand.
However things settled down on the field and the sound of the half time whistle came as a welcomed relief for Bohemians and also for referee Tony Walsh, not after the official sent visiting manager Clem Fanning from the line.
The second half offered little in terms of action until that goal in the 76th minute when David Whittle scored that free from all of 50 goals that left Villa keeper Dean Purcell blushing but more importantly from Bohemians point of view, they held out for a priceless three points after recent league results.
