College examination for hurlers on Sunday
BY PHIL FANNING
Sunday’s Crystal Cup Final against U. C. C. will provide Waterford with yet another competitive game as they prepare for the clash with Dublin in the opening round of the league two weeks later.
While last Sunday’s win over Clare was decidedly one sided this game will provide a much sterner test particularly if U. C. C. field at full strength in a game coming between Fitzgibbon clashes with Limerick I. T. on this Thursday and G.M.I.T. the following Wednesday.
Against U. L. in the semi final on Saturday last the Cork college did not start what would arguably be their best fifteen but in the course of the game, which went into extra time, they made a total of twelve substitutions, as they were entitled to, and that was what brought them victory in extra time.
The Waterford team on Sunday is likely to be very much along the lines of that which started against Clare as the College players will still be unavailable. If U. C. C. field at full strength we could well see Gary Hurney at full forward being directly opposed by club mate Richie Foley, captain and current full back for U.C.C., an interesting proposition indeed.
U. C. C. have almost all of last year’s successful Fitzgibbon Cup winning side available to them and that means a very strong and experienced side with a good spread of county panellists that includes such as Foley, Kevin Hartnett, Brian O’Sullivan, Stephen Moylan, Sean Farrell, Tadhg Og Murphy, Maurice Wilkinson, Michael Grace and Darach Honan.
With the declared resting of established stars such as Ken McGrath, Seamus Prendergast, Dan Shanahan, Eoin Murphy, John Mullane and Tony Browne the Waterford team for the National League is taking shape and Sunday’s performances could well decide the first fifteen for that competition.
First round opponents Dublin scored a big win over N. U. I. Galway last weekend so they too are obviously in good fettle and a win for Waterford on Sunday would be a huge confidence booster for this young Waterford side going into that very important game.
The big plus for this Waterford side at the moment is that every player is playing for his place so we are getting a big effort in every game. It will be the same on Sunday and the crowd in Dungarvan can expect real value for money.
