Motorists come to terms with one-way system
By Marion O’Mara
GARDAÍ in Tramore reported “no great” problems with traffic flow in the town as the new one-way traffic flow system came into operation yesterday (Monday).
Among the major changes are that cars can only drive down Main Street and Strand Street and there will be no left turn up Gallwey’s Hill from Strand Street. Upper Branch Road will also be one way with motorists only being able to use the road to exit the town.
In the first hours of the new system Billy Cowman, who owns Megabites sandwich bar on Main Street, said that it had come 10 years too late because a lot of business had gone or was going from the upper town area.
“The one-way will not be good in the summer because visitors will need to be able to get up the town and the changes make that complicated,” he said.
Terry Cunningham, who lives in the Moonvoy area, said that he normally parks at the Supervalu car park and he would walk from there to the beach. He didn’t believe that the new system would adversely affect him.
Eileen Ryan ended up with a longer spin than she expected at lunchtime on Monday.
She was going from her home in Riverstown to Stella Maris Secondary school to pick up her daughter. However, she ended up in a cul-de-sac in the Pond Road area and had to drive back down Branch Road, out to the Riverstown Roundabout, back up by the racecourse and into Tramore via the Old Waterford Road.
“We were given warnings that it was coming into effect,” she admitted after the extra long drive.
Unaffected by the system was Eileen Cuddihy who said that she normally walks anyway.
