Gardaí urge public to photograph youths terrorising vulnerable
By Mary Ellen Breen
A NUMBER of residents in the Tramore area have said they are being terrorised by groups of local youths.
These people have experienced youths urinating on their property, knocking over their bins and pelting stones at their house.
Cllr Maxine Keohan, who raised the issue at the Joint Policing Committee, said she believes that the young people involved in the antisocial behaviour range in age from 10 up to 16. She said they are leaving the estate where they live and going into other estates causing havoc and upsetting residents.
“Their parents have been approached but it continues. This is not going to be tolerated. Nobody is going to come in here and target people. If I have to name and shame these people I will,” the visibly concerned councillor told the Waterford News & Star.
She said the youths are targeting the most vulnerable people, single mothers, the elderly and people with disabilities.
She said the victims are afraid and are being threatened not to speak up.
“They are threatening people, saying if they go to the Gardaí they will make life hell for them.”
Gardaí have said that any residents experiencing problems may take a photograph of these people, regardless of their age, for the purpose of helping the Gardaí identify them.
Sergeant Gerry Lynch encouraged anyone who is being intimidated to contact them. He said that if people don’t stand up and make formal complaints the Gardaí can’t progress the case.
