Pedalling against crime
By Mary Ellen Breen
A FOURTH member of Tramore Gardaí has taken to his bike in a bid to stamp out crime in the town.
Over a year ago Tramore Gardaí came up with the idea of having members patrol the town on mountain bikes.
The operation has been so successful that they have increased the number of mountain bikes from three to four.
They now plan to divide Tramore into four areas so that each Garda will patrol a certain section.
Sergeant Gerry Lynch said travelling on bicycles is an easy and quick mode of transport in the town, which is proving very effective.
Cllr Lola O’Sullivan said the presence of the Gardaí in the community had not only kept crime down, but it had also made people feel more comfortable dealing with members of the Gardaí.
“It’s brilliant; you see them all over the place, on the beach, up in the town, everywhere. In general in Ireland you don’t see the Gardaí on the street as much but since they implemented this in Tramore they are more visible. People have more confidence in dealing with the Gardaí because they get to know them socially.”
Praising the good work being done by members in Tramore, she said: “They are doing tremendous work, it is phenomenal. A lot of crime has decreased in the last year so it’s clear they are doing a great job.”
