WIT ready for fray as Munster club draws made for 2010
BY GER LAWTON

Once the Waterford Crystal and McGrath Cups come around the next things that are never far away are the third level colleges competitions, namely the Fitzgibbon Cup and the Sigerson Cup and as usual WIT will be hot contenders for the Fitzgibbon Cup which is about to get underway.

WIT, winners last in 2008, are in group A of this year’s competition, a group which includes UCC, Limerick IT and the Galway Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT).

They get their campaign underway on Thursday, February 4 with a home tie against GMIT. The following Wednesday, February 10, they will take on Limerick IT, while on Tuesday February 16th they will complete their opening round of fixtures against UCC.

The other groups are made up of: Group B: NUI Galway, DIT, UCD and Cork IT. Group C: UL, St. Pats and UUJ.

If WIT win group A then they will play the third placed team in group B. If they come second in group A then they will play the runner up in group B, while if they come third then they will face the winner of group C, in the quarter-finals, which will be played on February 24.

The semi-finals and final of this season’s Fitzgibbon Cup will take place in Galway on the weekend of March 5/6.

In third level football championship, WIT will compete in the Trench Cup and have been drawn at home in round one against BMC (Belfast Metropolitan College). This tie will take place on February 3 at 2pm.

If they win that game then they will take on the winners of the clash between UU Coleraine and NCI (National College of Ireland).

Meanwhile, the Munster GAA council are certainly on the ball in 2010 as they have made the draws for the 2010 Munster Club Championships, which kick off next October.

In senior hurling, the Waterford county champions will take on the Cork champions in the Munster semi-final on November 14 at a Cork venue. The Waterford senior football champions will be out the previous weekend in the Munster quarter-finals, where they will take on the Clare champions in Waterford. If they win that then they will face the Cork Champions in Cork.

Whoever is crowned as the 2010 Waterford Intermediate hurling champions will receive a bye into the semi-finals of the Munster championship, where they will take on either the Clare or Tipperary champions, away from home on November 7. While their football counterparts have also got a semi-final bye where they will also take on the Clare or Tipperary champions on November 14.

The Waterford junior hurling champions this year have also received a bye into the semi-finals on November 21, where they will take on the Tipperary champions at a Waterford venue.

Waterford’s junior football champions, will have a home draw against the Clare champions on November 21.

The winners will take on the Limerick champions in the semi-final.
