Another busy week ahead for Davy’s men
BY PHIL FANNING

There seems to be no letup for the county senior hurling panel as they face into another busy week with three games scheduled to take place between Wednesday and Sunday.

Tomorrow (Wednesday) they will line out against Davy Fitzgerald’s other charges Limerick IT at a venue to be decided. On Saturday they will return to Carrickbeg for a game against All Ireland Club Champions, Portumna and the daunting schedule will be completed on Sunday in the Crystal Cup semi final against Clare or Tipperary which will be played at an away venue.

Certainly there can be no complaints that players are not getting every opportunity to impress but there are risks in such a heavy programme of games allied to tough training sessions can result in injuries. This is the time however in which the heavy training is done and with the start of the League just three weeks away on February 21st against Dublin the team will have got in a lot of hurling in preparation for it.

Apart from those involved in Tralee over the weekend there were a number of Waterford players involved with their Colleges in the Crystal Cup. Once again Richie Foley had an outstanding game at full back for UCC in their win over Justin McCarthy’s new look Limerick side while Thomas Connors played his part in University of Limerick’s extra time win over Limerick IT. That game also saw Ring’s Nollaig O’Murchadha coming on as a substitute to play a big part in UL’s win, scoring two vital points in extra time.

The Fitzgibbon Cup gets under way next week with WIT playing the first of their group games against Galway / Mayo IT in Ballygunner on the Thursday.

That game will see Adrian Power, Noel Connors and Shane Fives of the Waterford panel in action. In preparation for that game WIT will face Leinster Club Champions Ballyhale in a challenge game at Piltown tomorrow (Wednesday) evening at 7.30pm.

On Wednesday of next week the footballers of WIT will face Belfast Metro in the Trench Cup, most likely at a Dublin venue.

With the National Football League getting under way on Sunday week, when Waterford will open their campaign away to Leitrim, John Owens’ charges will play defending Sigerson Cup Champions Cork IT in a challenge game this week.
