Local trainer records a mixed double
BY APOLLO

Local trainer Vic Roche recorded a mixed double in Kilcohan Park last Friday night as he sent out the winner of a sprint and a standard trip race both winners being members of the July 2008 litter by Razldazl Billy ex Cailin Liath.

The first leg of the double arrived courtesy of the Willie Ryan and Jackie Roche-owned Knights Pride this 1/1 favourite recording back to back sprint victories in 18.01.

Recent four bend winner at Enniscorthy Ardcavan Girl took an absolute flyer from trap five but recovering well from a slow start ‘Knights’ went in hot pursuit of the leader. Dashing into the lead on the fence ‘Knights’ was soon in command racing on for a two and a half lengths success over ‘Ardcavan’.

The second leg of the double came with the P.D.M.J. Syndicate-owned Po Po Pokerface this 3/1 chance shedding her maiden status at the second time of asking in 29.73. Led down the back stretch by both Dodgy Box and Mays Valentia ‘Pokerface’ switched her challenge over to the fence and striking the front between the final two bends ‘Pokerface’ went on to record a one and a half lengths win over Dodgy Box. For those wondering about the winner’s curious name Po Po Pokerface was a hit single in 2009 for well known pop singer Lady Gaga.

Displaying good early pace from trap six the Leanne Rooney-owned Beautiful Queen (3/1) made no mistake in race one carving out a neat pillar to post 29.51 victory.

Well in control of matters at halfway the ‘Queen’ was forced to dig deep close home holding the late charge of Mays Misty by the minimum distance.

In a second two bend sprint the always prominent pair of Mums Brett and Portsoy Lassie settled down to do battle the length of the home stretch with the recent Clonmel two bend winner ‘Portsoy’ (3/1) emerging victorious by a neck in 18.29. The winner runs in the ownership of Breda Quirk and Raymond Hadden.

In the first semi final of the Benefit Meetings A7 Stake the John Fitzgerald and Phil Gough-owned and Padraig Gough-trained Sparta Pepsi (7/4) ran a determined first bend to lead all the way in 29.68.

Fending off the early attention of Blizzard Of Dust ‘Sparta’ set sail for home ahead of a rails seeking Nicky Nacky. After a first bend bump Munster Prince stayed on well into second spot but ‘Sparta’ was gone beyond catching eventually obliging by five lengths.

In the second semi final 3/1 chance Willies Nag running for Wexford owner Willie Robinson went a couple of lengths quicker making every yard of the running in 29.53. Kuda Mac tried hard in second place but ‘Willies’ was not slowing down up front going on to score by two lengths.

El Bandit (4/6) was the best backed entry in a 550 yard contest and this market leader duly delivered the goods for owner Sinead Cronin and trainer Peter Cronin in 30.34. Led to near the penultimate bend by both a fast starting Springmount Chat and Brykar Impact the ‘Bandit’ cruised into the lead on the rails before dashing clear for a four lengths defeat of a running on Willies King.

In the first semi final of the A6 Stake owner Michael Cashman and trainer Philip Coleman combined forces to land the spoils with 3/1 chance Black Guest. The early paced ‘Guest’ opted for a middle course throughout and while Da Vinci Billy never gave up the chase in second place the ‘Guest’ obliged by a length in 29.75.

Wexford trainer Philip Coleman hit the target again in the second qualifier with the Lar Roche-owned Siennas Star (6/4) posting back to back victories in 29.62.Taking over in the lead at the halfway point from the early pacesetter Maffra Blue ‘Siennas’ quickly put this race to bed storming clear to win out by four and a half lengths from Ballybawn Glory.

The early paced Coco Flash bounded into a clear lead in the final race of the night but coming with a determined challenge the James Moore-owned Minglers Impact (5/2) finished like a train to eventually outstay Coco Flash by two lengths. Time 29.50.
