Three questioned over shooting of brothers
By Marion O’Mara

THREE men were arrested and released without charge arising from an incident in which two men were shot at Dominic’s Place in the city in the early hours of Thursday morning last.

The injured men, two brothers who lived locally, were named as Jamie Connolly (30) and Darren Connolly (28). Both men were removed by ambulance to Waterford Regional hospital and one was detained in ICU and the other in the Orthopaedic unit.

As we went to press last night (Monday) a HSE spokesperson described their injuries as “not life threatening” but said they continued to be treated.

In the immediate aftermath of the incident, which occurred at 2.50am, a 29-year-old male was arrested in Dominic’s Place and detained at Waterford Garda Station under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act. Another male was arrested in the vicinity of Waterford Regional Hospital and charged under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. A third person was subsequently arrested.

A Garda spokesman said that all three were released without charge and a file would be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

It is understood that the injuries were caused with a shotgun.

As a forensic examination of the scene was conducted shocked neighbours said they heard nothing of the shotgun fire.

“This is a quiet neighbourhood and what happened is a shocking tragedy in our midst,” one man said.

A spokesman for Waterford Garda Station continued to appeal for witnesses to the incident, which remains under investigation.
