Nominate your own Grand Marshall
By Deirdre Dalton
FROM the day Cllr John Halligan was elected Mayor he has gone to every length to open up the office to ordinary people.
In keeping with this he is now inviting the people of Waterford city to nominate their own Grand Marshall for this year’s St. Patrick’s Day parade.
Over the past number of years, a local celebrity has been invited to lead the parade down the Quays. However, this year the Mayor would like to celebrate the contribution that is made by the many people in Waterford city who give their time freely to make their neighbourhood a better place to live.
“The public are invited to nominate anyone from Waterford city who has contributed to their community or organisation and who they feel should have their work acknowledged by taking on the role of Grand Marshall of this year’s parade,” said the Mayor.
Anyone making a nomination should ensure that the person they nominate would be willing to take on the role of leading the parade.
Nominations are being taken by Deise AM in WLRfm and should be sent to Deise AM by email to deiseam@wlrfm.com, text at 083 3333975 or phone 051 846123. The closing date for receipt of nominations is this Friday, February 5. The winning nomination will be announced on the Billy McCarthy show once their availability has been confirmed.
The theme of this year’s parade is ‘Through the looking glass’ which celebrates the history of glass in Waterford city and also looks to the future of the new Waterford Crystal which will be opening in June.
Everyone is welcome to enter the parade and there is no entry fee for community or walking entries.
Application forms are available on the Waterford City Council website under ‘notices’ and any queries regarding the parade can be made to Lisa Grant on 051 849709 or lgrant@waterfordcity.ie.
