School pals and community rally around to fund Ben’s treatment
By Mary Ellen Breen

GENEROUS members of the community have pulled together in a bid to raise money to help with treatment costs for little Ben Meagher.

Six-year-old Ben was recently diagnosed with T-cell lymphoma and is currently undergoing treatment.

Sports mad, Ben is a pupil in Scoil Lorcain and lives with his parents Serena and Paul and big sister Chloe in Prospect Mews.

He is a big fan of Manchester United and was delighted when his favourite player John O’Shea paid him a visit at home.

A junior member of Sacred Heart hurling club, Ben was also thrilled when John Mullane took time out to visit him and give him a few tips on improving his hurling.

The family have been overwhelmed by the support offered to them by the local community. A fundraiser was held in Heffernan’s bar in December and the night was a huge success.

Michael Taheny excelled as MC on the night and a host of singers entertained the huge crowd, including Larry Hogan, Mick Dalton, Kenny Stafford, Fran Sarsfield and local girl band Annam. Resident DJ Brian Keane kept the dance floor rocking until the early hours in true Keano style.

John Mullane made an appearance on the night to make the draw for the door prizes.

“A big thank you to all of those who supported the recent fundraising night in aid of Ben. Even through the recession, the good will and generosity of the people of Waterford and our local community, family and friends, came shinning through to make the night a huge success,” mum Serena said.

She also thanked the staff of Waterford Regional Hospital and Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin for their continued support and care.

She thanked Principal Harry Flynn and other members of the teaching staff at Scoil Lorcain, with a special mention for Ben’s young friends.

“A big thank you to all the boys in Ms McGovern’s class for the kindness and support that they show Ben.”

Thank you from Ben

THANKS to the organising committee, Laura and Michael Taheny, Lorraine and Derek O’Keeffe, Sandy and Derek Walsh and Geraldine Connolly who made the fundraising night one to remember.

Thank you to David Daniels and the staff of Harvey Printers who sponsored the tickets and posters.

To Margaret and Anthony Heffernan and their dedicated team of staff who were kept busy throughout the night and thanks to the doormen on the night, Conor and Mick.

Thank you to Philip Egan wholesale butchers who supplied finger food on the night, to Kevin Bailey and Eamonn Morrissey who cooked the tasty delights and to Frances Sinnott who prepared delicious sandwiches.

Thanks to all who donated spot prizes, to Derek O’Keeffe who approached many businesses in the city centre and to photographer Ray Kenny who provided the main door prize.

Thanks to Fran Conroy from Hasbro, who donated games to Crumlin Hospital, the company’s generosity is much appreciated.

To local jockey Danny Grant and fellow jockeys from the Curragh for their outstanding contribution, which was greatly appreciated.
