Déise don’t rank with DJ

INTERESTING to listen to former Kilkenny great D. J. Carey being interviewed on the RTE Sports Personality Of The Year television presentation on Sunday of last week.

One thing is for certain—the man from Gowran doesn’t see Waterford as any kind of serious threat to Kilkenny’s “five in a row’’ All-Ireland senior hurling title aspirations in 2010.

Asked if Kilkenny could make it five title wins on the trot—never before achieved in the 125 year history of the GAA—-the great D. J. went no farther than to say that they will be well up for it and will be very difficult to dislodge from their champion pedestal.

Fair enough, there will be no major argument on that one. However it was his response to the question—-“who would you regard as the champions biggest threat to the “five in a row’’—-that particularly tickled my fancy.

Without a second thought D. J. acknowledged the emerging power that Tipperary now are, having won successive Munster titles and gone so very close to victory in last year’s All-Ireland decider against the Cats. Next up for him was Galway, a team that hasn’t always delivered on expectations but one that also gave the champions a very decent run for their money in this year’s Leinster semi-final.

Then the surprises. Anthony Daly’s Dublin could be a danger, said D. J., and he went on to cite the chances of a Cork side which he insisted will be a much more formidable force next season. Not a mention of his nearest neighbour, Waterford, however. Not as much as a cursory acknowledgement that their hat too will be firmly in the ring.

I would like to think it was some sort of oversight on D. J.’s part, but if not then what it all amounts to is a total disregarding of our chances of glory—-along let it be said with the likes of Limerick, Clare, and Wexford. (PAR)

My hope now is that in being all but written off by a man with such a flawless hurling pedigree as D. J. has, that it will motivate our fellows all the more when the time comes to put that motivation into action. Happy New Year D. J. !!
