Ardkeen cinema overcomes objections
By Jennifer Long
RESIDENTS of the Dunmore Road are to enjoy the luxury of a new eight-screen cinema which will be located adjacent to the Uluru pub, the Waterford News & Star can reveal.
A 1,429-seater complex has just been granted planning permission by An Bord Pleanála over a year after the proposal first came before Waterford City Council.
The cinema complex is to be developed by Noel Frisby Construction Ltd. on behalf Dublin clients, Newenham Mulligan and Associates. They received planning from Waterford City Council for the project in August, but an appeal was then lodged to An Bord Pleanála by the Ardkeen Village Residents’ Association. They were worried about noise in the area late at night and also the possibility of a pedestrian link to Bromley Way in Ardkeen Village becoming a location for anti-social behaviour.
Yesterday (Tuesday) residents’ spokesperson Cormac Gibney said he hadn’t yet seen the five conditions attached to the final grant of planning permission so wouldn’t be in a position to comment on the residents’ view of planning. Five private residents of Bromley Way who objected to the project initially did not appeal the original grant of planning permission. The cinema got the go-ahead from An Bord Pleanála subject to five conditions. These include that before any development take place on site, those behind it put in place proposals for the protection of existing trees and draw up a detailed landscaping plan.
They’ve also been ordered to put a management scheme in writing regarding the operation of the carpark during late-night screenings, and contribute €53,000 for services in the area.
Waterford city has just one cinema at the moment although permission was granted a year ago for another facility as part of the Railway Square development. INSIDE
