GAA: Late late goal wins the day
City League Under 13 Div 3 Hurling Final Ferrybank 3-11, Sacred Heart 3-8
THE 2004 under13 div3 hurling final, sponsored again this year by Countrystyle Foods took place at Slieverue and was contested between Ferrybank and Sacred Heart.
It was one of the best City League hurling finals played in a long number of years. Both teams had a number of fine hurlers and the general standard of the game was very high with some classic points taken from play. It was Ferrybank’s first title for over four years and Sacred Heart’s first final appearance for over five years.
Sacred Heart captain Arron Jacob opened the scoring with a well-taken point which was followed up with a point from Paul O’Brien to give them a great start. Neil Wymms opened Ferrybank’s account with a point from a groundstroke. DJ McGee made two good saves in the Ferrybank goal before Ferrybank got the first goal at the other end through Eric Corcoran.
Paul O’Brien replied with a great point on the run for Sacred Heart and before the break Ferrybank’s Cormac O’Driscoll scored the point of the game when picking the ball on the run and hitting it between the posts. At half time the teams were level on a score of 1-5 apiece.
The second half was nip and tuck between the two sets of forwards with never more than three points between the sides. Man of the Match at center-forward for the winners Cormac O’Driscoll, scored 1-5 in total. Others with impressive tallies were Eric Corcoran with 1-4 for the winners and Paul O’Brien with 0-5 for Sacred Heart. The winning goal was scored by Ferrybank’s Neil Wymms in the final minute. Both teams had some very fine skillful hurlers on view and were a credit to their mentors and it will be no surprise to see some of them featuring in next year’s Tony Forristal Waterford team.
Best for Sacred Heart on the day were Sean Brett, Josh Byrne, Robert Breslin, Tom Waring, Paul O’Brien and Arron Jacob. For Ferrybank best were DJ McGee, Stephen English, Neil Wymms, Eric Corcoran, Sean Lawless and Man of the Match Cormac O’Driscoll Many thanks to Referee Gerry O’Connell and to the Slieverue groundstaff
