Viking group condemns government
THE Save Viking Waterford Action Group has condemned the government for its contradictory statements in relation to the Woodstown Viking Site.
In recent weeks the SVWAG has attempted to highlight how little is being made public on government intentions re the N25 by-pass and the extraordinary site at Woodstown.
The government has refused to explain to people what their plans are for the site or when they will make a decision on excavation. Even more worryingly, what they have said is riddled with contradictions.
Chairman of SVWAG, Dr Catherine Swift, commented: “This government claims to have seen the light since the local elections and they’re now willing to listen to the electorate and be more open. “However, the information that we have requested from Ministers Cullen and Roche; such as the identity of the experts whose reports the fate of Woodstown seems to hang, and the remit they were given; have yet to receive a reply.
“Are the road developers the archaeological experts we’re waiting on? Or are the experts the people from the NRA, the Department of Arts, Sports and Tourism and the National Museum whom Minister Cullen credited with making recommendations on Woodstown in the Select Committee on Environment on the 23rd June?
“Michael Egan of the NRA is reported in the Irish Times of 19th November, as telling Kilkenny County Council that excavation at Woodstown won’t delay the building of the by-pass or add to its costs, whereas he said in June that delays caused by archaeological investigations would take years and cost millions.
“Mr. Egan also said to Kilkenny County Council that a decision on excavation won’t be made until mid February. Minister Roche said in October it would be made in January and of course Minister Cullen originally said it would be made in May,” Dr. Swift said.
