THE golden era of John Player Tops which began in Waterford with Tops of the town, will be recalled at the first Variety Club Dinner at the Divine Restaurant in the Forum on Friday night.
The former National Organiser of John Player Tops Niall O’Flynn and local legend Dernny Corcoran will be among the guests.
The theme of the night is a nostalgic trip down memory lane to the old (and not so old) days of Tops, which spanned 32 years.
It all began in Waterford with the Tops of the town in 1962, developing into a nation-wide showcase of amateur variety entertainment in 1964 as John Player Tops.
Michael Grant, a prominent and successful figure in Tops in Waterford, has organised the event.
Bryan Flynn, whose Waterford Crystal Show “A Cut Above the Rest” won the National Final in 1994, will travel from Cork for the function on Friday night.
His brother, David, along with Ray Collins, Vicki Graham and Katie Honan will perform some of the beautiful melodies from the Tops days.
The MC for the occasion is Eddie Wymberry who was on stage for many memorable shows from the golden era of Tops. He will, no doubt, regale us with his anecdotes “from the horses mouth”.
This will be a night of memories, stories and a trip back in time with film clips of bygone days and characters dear to all.
Doors open at 7pm and dinner is at 8pm. Some tickets are still available and all are welcome.
