WATERFORDCity Council Library Service is delighted to announce that it will be hosting Anne Frank: A history for today, at the Central Library, Lady Lane, from March 27th until April 13th.
This is an international travelling exhibition designed by the curators of the Anne Frank Huis in Amsterdam, which portrays the history of the Holocaust from the perspective of Anne Frank and her family; and aims to show that there are differences between people in every society (cultural, ethnical, religious and political).
Anne Frank: A History for today consists of a 20 minute DVD and an exhibition of 28 panels which juxtapose the photographs of the Frank family with those of historical events of the time, and shows how persecuted people such as the Franks were affected by political decisions and by the actions of individuals.
The exhibit introduces visitors to the history of World War I and World War II. The photos reflect how the rise of the Nazi Party affected the lives of a German Jewish family. The enormity of the government directed killing of Jews, Gypsies, disabled people, Slavs and others is shown. The role of individual action now and then is central.
The exhibit shows individuals who chose to join the Nazi move-ment, become perpetrators, as well as others who were bystanders and those few who were willing to help or resist Nazi tyranny. The exhibit provides a vehicle for visitors to view and think about prejudice, discrimination, hate and violence.
Waterford City Council Library Service is taking bookings for guided tours of this exhibition. Admission is free but booking is essential for group visits and will be on a first come first served basis.
