Bargain hunters reap sale bonanza

BARGAIN hunters with plenty of spare cash bagged fantastic value with up to seventy per cent off selected items in Waterford’s post Christmas sales, which got underway in the city on Tuesday.
From early morning shoppers were out in force availing of the cut price electrical goods, homeware, toys, furniture, fashion and shoes.
Motorists were cramming the car park of Woodies DIY before the doors even opened on Tuesday morning and once inside preparations begun in earnest for Christmas 2006 as shoppers picked up decorations at greatly reduced prices. At Morris DIY there was also 50% off Christmas stock and some great bargains to be had.
Those looking for exceptional value in electrical goods were not disappointed at Kelly & Dollard who held a “Knockout Sale” with washing machines down from €399 to €199. There were also savings of €150 on selected dishwashers, a whopping €300 on the Tricity ceramic cooker. On offer at half price was the Kenwood cordless kettle and the Delongi steam iron.
Queues also formed outside Shaws for their post Christmas sale which also got underway on Tuesday morning.
In the cosmetic department many items, including leading brand names, were being sold for half price. Leading brand dinner plates were reduced from €8 each to €2 while the Create A Moment mug set was down from €20 to €5.
Anyone looking for saucepans bagged a real bargain with the Insignia 8-piece set which was down from €240 to €140. In the fashion department there was up to 70% off some items while the fashionable Michael H range was less 25%.
Men were tempted out of their beds and into the shops with star buys in jackets, coats, jeans, trousers and shirts.
Emmet Foley, on Patrick Street, was open for business early on Tuesday morning with sports jackets originally priced at €220 being sold for just €40. Suits normally retailing at €450 and €500 were half price and shirts were down from €84.95 to €20.
The men, in fact, were spoiled for choice with great value also on offer at Tony Roche Menswear, Gregory’s of Patrick Street and John Michaels, of Michael Street. They were on the streets again on Wednesday morning for the one-day sale at Fitzgerald’s Menswear, Barronstrand Street. At Tony Fitzgerald’s, where the sale kicked off at 9am, there were fantastic reductions to be availed of in jackets, shirts, shoes and jeans.
The queues for the tills went as far back as the shop doors as men armed themselves with special offers such as leather jackets reduced from €329 to €175, Lacoste shirts for sale at half price and hand-made leather shoes reduced from €180 to €79. Meanwhile, the trendy younger men made a beeline for Heroes, where the bargain items included jeans which were down from €65 to €45 and Quicksilver hoodies reduced from €60 to €38. At Next in City Square and also Ardkeen, there were queues outside the doors for the 5am opening time on Tuesday.
Half price offers on shoes and handbags were of particular appeal with good reductions also on offer on jewellery, watches and also Christmas items such as wrapping paper, cards and gift-tags.
At Dunnes Stores and also at Roches Store, large crowds are expected to gather for their sales commencing this morning (Thursday). In Roches, however, reductions of between 10% and 30% already on offer in nearly all its outlets and departments, led to the store being thronged by lunchtime yesterday. The sale at River Island, which got underway on Tuesday, was still attracting hoards of young shoppers as were the sales at other the other ‘high street’ fashion chains such as Warehouse, Oasis and TopShop.
