NHL Round 3 – Waterford v Kilkenny – Score by Score
1-15 mins. Kilkenny go on the attack from the throw in, Buckley to Lyng and on to Donnelly who sends over inside twenty five seconds. Kilkenny take possession from the puck out but T. J. Reid is wide from play. The umpire draws the referee’s attention to an altercation involving Barry Coughlan and Water Walsh and both players receive yellow cards. Kevin Moran is fouled in midfield and Pauric Mahony opens Waterford’s account from the free. T. J. Reid is fouled and sends over the free in the sixth minute. Maurice Shanahan is clearly fouled but no free and another altercation between Coughlan and Walsh escapes the notice of the referee.A clear chance for Waterford as the ball breaks to Jake Dillon on the 20 metre line but he shoots wide. T. J. Reid points again after Cillian Buckley is fouled just inside his own half. Jamie Barron is fouled in midfield but Mahony is just wide from the free. Philip Mahony is dispossessed going forward and the ball is sent to Martin Keoghan for the Tullaroanman to send over his second point. Billy Ryan is wide for Kilkenny. Waterford attack, Shanahan lays off to Barron but the midfielder shoots wide.
16-25 mins. Maurice Shanahan sends over from play but the referee calls for a free instead of allowing the advantage and Mahony sends over Waterford’s second point. Tadhg De Burca makes a magnificent catch on the run from the puck out but the referee penalises him for leaning on his opponent and Reid sends over the free. Jamie Barron works hard to send Shanahan clear but his effort is wide. De Burca breaks forward, lays off to Pauric Mahony and takes the return to send over a great point in the 18th minute. Walter Walsh is fouled in the half forward line and T. J. Reid extends the Kilkenny lead from the free.A Conor Gleeson clearance is flicked on by Devine to put Mikey Kearney clear for a run at goal with just Eoin Murphy to beat but the referee whistles him back for a free, not the first baffling decision by Horgan who gives Joey Holden a yellow card before Mahony sends over the free in the 22nd minute to leave two points between the teams.Billy Ryan and Reid are wide from play and following a foul on Donnelly Reid’s free comes back off the upright and is put out for a ‘65’ which he sends over.
26 -35 mins. A free to Waterford inside their own half is sent short to Barron by Austin Gleeson, he takes the return pass on the run forward towards goal but sends wide. Martin Keoghan hits a great point for Kilkenny under pressure in the 30th minute. Tom Devine is playing a lone hand on the edge of the Kilkenny square as the ball goes forward from a throw in outfield. He gets the ball to hand and rounds Padraig Walsh but Eoin Murphy saves brilliantly. From the clearance T. J. Reid wins possession and puits his side five points clear. Pauric Mahony is wide from play as Liam Blanchfield replaces Billy Ryan in the Kilkenny attack. Conor Gleeson is denied a free as he is dispossessed and as Walter Walsh is about to regain possession Ian O’Regan fouls him and Reid increases the lead from the free. As three minutes of added time is signalled John Donnelly sends over his second point. Shane Fives is fouled in his own half and Austin Gleeson sends over the free. In the last action of the half Reid is wide from play and the sides go in with the score Kilkenny 0-11, Waterford 0-5.
36 – 50 mins.
Waterford come out with Colin Dunford and Patrick Curran on board for Austin Gleeson and Mikey Kearney. Shane Fives is fouled and Pauric Mahony sends over the free inside a minute. Philip Mahony wins a free from the puck out and Pauric’s free falls short for Devine to win the ball and lay off to Patrick Curran who sends over a fine point in the 38th minute. Kilkenny hit back with Martin Keoghan sending over. Good work by Barron gives Curran another chance but his effort from midfield in narrowly wide. Lester Ryan is wide as James Maher replaces Conor O’Shea in the Kilkenny midfield. Kevin Moran is fouled and Pauric Mahony points the free .Jake Dillon is fouled in midfield but Mahony’s free is collected by Eoin Murphy and cleared. Stephen Bennett replaces Jake Dillon in the Waterford attack. Kevin Moran is fouled but Mahony’s free comes back off the post and Kilkenny are awarded a free out as Tom Devine is given a yellow card. A Kilkenny clearance goes to Colin Dunford and he cuts the Kilkenny lead to three points.
51 – 60 mins. – T. J. Reid has moved into the full forward position, shadowed by De Burca, and wins possession from a Lester Ryan delivery, gets past de Burca and crashes the ball to the net in the 51st minute. Moran sends Bennett away, he sends the ball to Devine who in turn picks out Patrick Curran. The Dungarvan man is upended heading for goal and the penalty is awarded. Stephen Bennett is assigned to take it but his effort is weak and Murphy saves easily in the 54th minute. Luke Scanlon replaces Lester Ryan in midfield for Kilkenny as Pauric Mahony points following a foul on Jamie Barrron. Pat Lyng is awarded a soft free and Reid points to put six points between the sides again. Waterford attack and Tom Devine sends over a fine point. Kilkenny reply with another point from a free by T. J. Reid as D. J. Foran replaces Maurice Shanahan in the Waterford attack.
61-70 mins. After James Maher sends wide Luke Scanlon extends the Kilkenny lead with a fine effort. Colin Dunford sends Kevin Moran away and his effort is saved by Eoin Murphy for a ‘65’ which Mahony points. Tommy Ryan is then sent on for PauricMahony but Kilkenny drive on with Martin Keoghan, James Maher and T. J. Reid(F) adding points between the 64th and 66th minutes to take a nine point lead, the latter after Ian O’Regan brings down Martin Keoghan to prevent a certain goal and is given a yellow card. D. J. Foran makes a great catch from a Bennett delivery and breaks clear on goal but his effort lacks power and Murphy saves. Keoghan sends over his fifth point for Kilkenny with the game going into four minutes of added time Patrick Curran sets up Tommy Ryan to beat Eoin Murphy with a low shot to the net. Kilkenny have the last word with T. J. Reid capping a fine display with another point from a free for an eight point victory.
