Dick McCarthy of St. Anne’s Tennis Club in Waterford last week captained the Ireland team at the Super Senior ITF World Team Championships at Lake Nona, Florida.
Ireland had teams competing in the four cup events. Dick was on the team that competed for the Britannia Cup. Along with Dick the Irish team was made up by: William Caldwell, Windsor Tennis Club, Belfast; Tim Eaton, Shankill Tennis Club, Dublin; Connor Sparks, Fitzwilliam Tennis Club, Dublin. There are also teams competing in the Jack Crawford Cup (Men), the Kitty Godfree and Althea Gibson Cups (Women).
This is the 11th time that Dick has represented Ireland Internationally. Dick recently won the Irish National Seniors Veterans Closed men’s singles in 2017 played in St Ann’s Tennis Club, Waterford. This was the first time the Tournament was played outside of Dublin.
The Super Senior ITF World Team Championships consists of nine team cups and is the highest ranked teams’ event on the ITF Seniors Circuit for male and female players in the age categories.
In the group stages Ireland lost out to Sweden before defeating the US Virgin Irelands. In the knockout stages, Ireland lost out to Argentina and Mexico.
