Figures released by the Central Statistics Office show that 17% of homeless people were employed when the census was taken last year.
The data released by the CSO show almost 7,000 people were homeless across the country.
On the night the census was taken last year, April 24, 2016, 6,906 people were homeless of which 896 were families.
Almost two-thirds of the homeless were male and 27% were under 18.
Of those aged 15 and over, 17% were at work and more than 2,000 were either unemployed or looking for a first-time job.
The statistics also show that 73% of homeless people were in the Dublin region, while 14% were not Irish and the average age was 31.
