Waterford FC coach Alan Reynolds is confident that the Blues can up their performance, starting at home to Wexford FC this weekend, after his side were denied three points by a late minute Aaron Ashe strike against Shelbourne at Tolka Park in the SSE Airtricity League First Division on Friday night last.
Speaking after the game, Reynolds said, “It was a battling performance from us. In fairness, they pushed on for the last 20 minutes and we drew them onto us a bit but I’ll take a point because they are in a good vein of form.”
“WE WEREN’T BEATEN”
“People have to realise they beat UCD and Cobh Ramblers in their last two games before tonight’s game so I knew that it was going to be tough. We were so close to getting the three points and it’s snatched at the death but that’s what it is.
“We were away from home tonight and we weren’t beaten so we’ve got to take that. We got off to the perfect start with the goal inside the opening four minutes and it was a good finish from Shane (O’Connor). I think that maybe we could have got another one in the first half.
“I thought that it was tight enough after the goal and there wasn’t too much football played. It was just a scrap and I think that it has been like that in a lot of games that we’ve played against these fellas. Shelbourne did have some possession but how many chances they created? I’m not too sure.
“Even though they had us under pressure in the second half of the game, I don’t think they created an awful lot and I’m disappointed that we’ve conceded the goal at the end but that’s football. We’ve got to move on from this game and look to the next one.”
TOP OF THE PILE
“You would forget that we’re still top of the table. We’re still a few points ahead and I’ve spoken to the boys in the dressing room there. In our last four games, we’ve had three of them away from home so in our first six games, we’ve had four away so we now have a run of home games.
“It would have been nice to get the three points here tonight but now we can go and concentrate on playing at home again next week. We need to try push on and the home games are going to be vital. We knew that this was coming because it’s like the first series of games but it will be nice to playing back in the RSC.
“Our home form has been decent but we’ve got to play better than that. There is no point in trying to fool anyone because we’ve got to play better and we will. We’ve got to strengthen and also get a few players back like Dean O’Halloran and Sander Puri.
“I think that we’ve got to add competition but that’s what I think is lacking in our squad. The transfer window is now open and we’re close enough with a few players. We’ll see what happens in the next few days. At the minute, we still have everyone on board but we’ll see how players feel when new players come in. They might want to go.”
