The scene of the collision on Catherine’s Street yesterday afternoon where the pursuit of two thieves abruptly ended.

AN armed robbery of Jaybees shop on the Dunmore Road last Thursday turned into a high speed car chase, a hit and run and finally an apprehension by Waterford Gardaí after a pursuit on foot through the City Centre.

According to Waterford Gardaí, two men went into Jaybees shop at 11:45am on Thursday, May 11 armed with knives. They demanded cash, and left in a marine coloured Ford Focus, registration. 00 C 21681

Later that same day, at approximately 2:45pm the car was spotted by Waterford Gardaí on the Quay who immediately attempted to intercept the vehicle. A high speed pursuit commenced and soon ended abruptly when the Ford Focus crashed into a car, which was stopped at the lights on Catherine Street at the time. The two men, aged 25 and 18, then got out of the car and attempted to get away on foot. After a dramatic chase through the city, which was witnessed by hundreds of on-lookers, the men were soon apprehended and arrested. They are presently being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act at Waterford Garda Station and will appear at Waterford District Court later this morning.
