A 25-YEAR-OLD male appeared at Waterford District Court on Friday morning to face charges of financing a terrorist organisation.

Hasan Bal, formerly with an address at O’Connell Street in the centre of the city, was arrested on Thursday morning and charged in the early hours of Friday morning at Waterford Garda Station.

One charge is contrary to the Criminal Justice – Terrorist Offences Act, 2005 and relates to unlawfully and wilfully providing, collecting or receiving funds intending that they be used for the benefit of a terrorism organisation on October 2. The second charge was for attempting to provide financial support to a similar group. The two charges date back to October of 2015.

Bal was remanded in custody until Tuesday morning when he will again appear at Waterford District Court.
