  • Tramore Golf Club’s Robin Dawson is flying high at the European Nations Cup in Spain as he stormed into a share of the lead after two rounds at Real Club de Golf de Sotogrande. The Maynooth University carded a best-of-the-day, three-under-par 69 to lead on four-under-par with Welshman Jack Davidson, who signed for a second successive 70. The pair enjoy a whopping six shot lead over another Welshman, David Boote.

Robin, who has his second column in next week’s Waterford News & Star, is determined to go all the way this week after finishing second on two weeks running at the South African Amateur Open Stroke Play and the Cape Province Open in February and with ten birdies in the opening two rounds the Waterford man goes into today’s third round in with a brilliant chance of winning one of the top prizes in European Amateur golf. He tees off today’s round at 2.30pm local time.

Ireland came into this event as defending champions and at the halfway stage they were second, five strokes behind Wales. The full Irish team and their standings:
