ON Sunday next, March 19 Dr. Mary McAleese, former President of Ireland, will preach in Christ Church Cathedral, Waterford, at 10am and launch the ‘Joy Bells’ of Waterford following the service at 11am.

The have been silenced for renovation but this Sunday their sound will will herald joy not hate, welcome not exclusion, co-responsibility not exploitation.

“It is time for the Christian message of love to be proclaimed in solidarity with women and men terrified by the increased legitimating of hate that is emerging these last months. We will ring out hate, xenophobia, exploitation and fear and ring in a call for solidarity, truth and justice,” said Very Rev. Maria Jansson.

Bells will also be ringing out at St. Carthage’s Cathedral, Lismore, St. Patrick’s Methodist Church, Waterford, the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity, Barronstrand Street, Waterford and Killea Chapel, Dunmore East.

The bell ringing ceremony will also be marked across the world including in Rome, in Miami Beach, Florida, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, Nongkhai, Thailand, Notre Dame University in the United States, St Paul’s Cathedral, Melbourne, Australia, BSP Bible Study & Prayer Group, Lilongwe, Malawi, St Peter & St Paul Anglican Church, Springs, South Africa.
