1–10 mins. – Waterford, playing with the breeze into the terrace goal, pile on the pressure from the start with the first scoring opportunity fall to Mikey Kearney from a side line cut inside the Kilkenny 20 metre line but his well struck effort is pulled just wide. Waterford backs playing with fierce intensity in the opening minutes with De Burca dominating as a primary ball winner. A Pauric Mahony free from inside his own half drops short and is fielded by Patrick Curran under pressure. He spots Shane Bennett free in front of the posts and sends a high hand pass to him. The Ballysaggart man connects first time in the air with force from some six metres out from goal but Eoin Murphy makes an outrageous save for a ‘65’ which Pauric Mahony sends wide from in front of the posts. The pressure on the Kilkenny defence continues as Patrick Curran shoots narrowly wide. Waterford lose possession on their ‘65’ and T. J. Reid is fouled going away with the ballto open the scoring from the free against the run of play in the 6th minute. A minute later the sides are level when Jamie Barron’s short sideline cut to Pauric Mahony is recycled to Conor Gleeson who sends over from midfield. By the 10th minute Waterford are two points ahead with Mahony sending over two frees from inside his own half after De Burca was fouled coming away in possession each time.
11- 20 mins. – Stephen Daniels escapes censure for a heavy tackle on Pat Lyng and Reid scores his second point from the free. Shane Bennett is narrowly wide but Kevin Moran wins Eoin Murphy’s puck out in midfield and sends Tom Devine away to bear down on goal, drawing the defenders before supplying the perfect pass to Patrick Curran who gave Murphy no chance as he crashed the ball to the net from close range in the 13th minute. Richie Hogan replies with a point before Curran races on to a Barry Coughlan clearance and points to maintain Waterford’s four point advantage. It is point for point now as T. J. Reid sends over after being fouled and seconds later Barron points after another short sideline cut to Michael Walsh is returned to him. Under the puck out De Burca receives a yellow card for a wild swing and Reid points the free. In the 20th minute Reid sends over his first point from play to cut the Waterford lead to two points. Michael Walsh is fouled in possession from O’Regan’s puck out and Mahony restores the three point margin between the teams.
21 – 35mins. – Pauric Mahony becomes the second Waterford player to receive a yellow card for a foul but this time Reid is wide from the free. Reid himself receives a yellow card for a foul on Conor Gleeson and Mahony makes no mistake from the free. Referee awards a soft free to Kilkenny and Reid points. De Burca is again fouled after winning ‘dirty ball’ and Mahony’s effort from outside his own ‘45’ is deflected forcing Murphy into a smart save at the expense of a ‘65’ which Mahony sends over. A good Kilkenny move out of defence is finished over the bar by Pat Lyng in the 30th minute but seconds later Waterford attack and Patrick Curran sends Mikey Kearney through on goal from the right wing but his angled shot skims wide at the far post with Eoin Murphy beaten. Pauric Mahony points following a foul on Walsh and Jonjo Farrell replies from play. Mahony follows up with two further points from frees following fouls on Bennett and Curran but Kilkenny have the last score of the half as midfielder Ollie Walsh gets on the scoreboard to leave the half time score Waterford 1–11, Kilkenny 0-10.
36 –50 mins. – Kilkenny send Walter Walsh into the attack for the second half, replacing Sean Morrissey. Kilkenny attack from the throw in with Hogan breaking forward along the wing only to be forced over the sideline by De Burca. Waterford attack and in a goalmouth scramble Devine wins the close in free and Mahony opens up a five point lead. The exchanges continue fiercely between two committed sides and in the 41st minute Barron again works the one two from a short sideline cut, this time with Mahony, to send over his third point from play.Walter Walsh marks his introduction with a point from play and, after Richie Hogan receives a yellow card for a late hit on Noel Connors, Reid follows up with two more scores, from a free and play, to bring the deficit to a goal with twenty minutes remaining to play.
51 – 60 mins. – Kilkenny send Paddy Deegan on for midfielder Ollie Walsh and Kilkenny cut the Waterford lead to just two points with a point by Reid after O’Regan concedes a ‘65’. Waterford ring in the changes with Austin Gleeson replacing Mikey Kearney and Brian O’Halloran coming in for Shane Bennett and following the puck out Pat Lynd ships a heavy knock from Daniels and is stretchered off with Daniels receiving a yellow card. Brick Walsh is fouled but Mahony is wide from the free directly in front of the posts. Some poor decision making by referee Horgan increases the pressure on Waterford as the game moved into the last ten minutes.
61 – 70 mins. – Richie Hogan is wide with a good chance for Kilkenny before Waterford go three clear again in the 62nd minute from another Mahony free after Conor O’Shea is penalised for picking the ball off the ground. Jamie Barron gets on to a breaking ball from a Paul Murrphy clearance and sends over a great point to give his side a four point cushion as Jake Dillon replaces Devine in the Deise attack. Reid points a ‘65’ but is then wide from a free in midfield. Kilkenny are awarded a free from just inside their own half and Eoin Murphy races out to take it and duly sends it over the bar. Austin Gleeson is now operating in at full forward ass Waterford crowd the middle third. With the game going into four minutes of addedtimeEoin Murphy sends in a low ball from a free but after a battle for possession in front of the posts McNulty clears and Austin Gleeson shoots wide at the other end. Kilkenny move to within a point with a Kieran Joyce point as Gavin O’Brien replaces the injured Stephen Daniels and Richie Hogan is wide under pressure. Kevin Moran rises to make a great catch and sends play deep into the Kilkenny half with the game into the fifth minute of added time. The ball comes back out and Moran again wins possession to pin Kilkenny back into their own half with the final whistle coming to leave Waterford the deserved victors with just a single point to spare.
