There were mixed fortunes for Waterford players in the blue of Munster at the weekend as they province’s hurlers blitzed Ulster in Thurles, while the footballers were well beaten by Ulster in Parnell Park.
The Déise had six representatives on the Munster hurling panel with Barry Coughlan, Noel Connors, Shane Fives, Jamie Barron and Shane Bennett (0-1) starting the game, while Stephen Bennett came on as sub and bagged himself a goal in stoppage time, which was set up by his brother Shane.
Tipperary stars Seamus Callanan and Michael Breen combined for 2-8 with the Drom & Inch man Callanan scoring 1-7 in a captain’s role.
Munster got off to the perfect start with Michael Breen’s third minute goal but Ulster responded gamely and battled throughout the first-half to ensure that Munster led by 1-10 to 0-7 at the interval.
The crucial score of the second-half came ten minutes after the restart when Callanan billowed the Ulster net to stretch his side’s advantage and from that point on there was no way back for the Ulster men and the Bennett’s combination goal in injury-time sealed a comprehensive win for Anthony Daly’s side, who also have John Mullane as a selector, along with Tommy Dunne.
Munster will play Leinster in the Final in Semple Stadium on Thursday evening at 7.45pm.
