The World Indoor Athletic Championships were staged in Portland Oregan USA last week and on Saturday last a special 800 metres race over 60 was held promoting and showcasing masters athletics and Joe Gough West Waterford was one of six athletes from around the world invited to compete in the event. In a thrilling race Joe was disputing it up front close home running neck and neck with David Roy Wilcox of Great
Britain when he appeared to stumble and fall as he crossed the line with the verdict going to Wilcox in 2 minutes 15.90 seconds with Joe just inches behind in second in 2.16.01, in third place was Olesandr Lysenko from Ukraine in 2.17.38. Once again Joe came up with another top class performance as always and the organisers of the championships considered Joe’s event to be the race of the entire championships. Very well done Joe. He is off to Italy next week to compete in the European Masters Indoors from March 29th to April 3rd and Brendan Leahy Waterford is expected to compete there also.
