VIKINGS are descending upon the city tomorrow, with over 2,500 runners set to don their running shoes over three different distances at 9am on the Mall tomorrow morning (June 27) for the third annual Waterford Viking Marathon.
To facilitate this mass start, road closures will take place on the Mall from 7am while a number of closures will also take place along the race route from 8:30am.
Closures in place across the city should be lifted by 10am but motorists are advised to allow extra time for journeys and to pay extra attention and obey any diversion signs in place.
The Tramore Road from Ballindud to Kingfisher will be closed all day from 8am to 4pm.
Further detailed information on the race routes are available on the Viking Marathon website at http://www.waterfordvikingmarathon.com/
There will be 1,100 parking spaces available at Waterford Institute of Technology on the Cork Road which is just over a mile from the race start point at the Mall.
A shuttle bus will be provided to transport runners from the WIT Car park to close to the start point at The Mall.
The last bus to guarantee on-time arrival at the start of the race for 9am will leave WIT at 8.30am.
Buses will also be provided from the finish at the RSC back to Parnell Street. The finish line at the RSC is less than half a mile from the WIT Car Park.
No parking is available at the Regional Sports Centre (RSC) throughout this event.
Spectators on the day are also advised to be aware of traffic and parking restrictions along the route, while the best viewing areas are recommended to be along the route in the city, in Tramore and the stands at the finish line in the RSC.
