WATERFORD and Lismore’s new Bishop Elect Fr Alphonsus Cullinan says his appointment is much more than a job – it is a vocation.

The Bishop Elect feels comfortable coming to Waterford having lived both by the seaside and in a city environment in Lahinch, Co Clare and Limerick city. “I am really looking forward to being a Bishop here and I am going to try my best. The welcome has been really beautiful. Everyone has been so positive and so welcoming right across the board,” he said.

The Bishop Elect has been inundated with e-mails, texts and phone calls and has a pile of letters on his desk that he has to respond to. He is thankful for the prayers of so many people.

He will be ordained this Sunday at a special ceremony in the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity at 3pm.
