West Waterford’s Gary Hurley (21) continued his remarkable run of form for 2014 when he finished in a tie for second at the European Amateur Golf Championship over the weekend at the Dukes Course at St. Andrews.
Hurley led after a the opening round after shooting a brilliant 66 and was in contention all the way through the tournament as rounds of 72, 76 and 71 followed to give him a final total of one over par which saw him finish three shots adrift of eventual winner, Ashley Chesters, of England who was winning the title for the second year in a row.
Gary had to make do with the bronze medal after he missed out on silver on a countback to Max Roehrig of Germany. Speaking afterwards Gary said, ‘I am delighted with my performance this week.’
This week he’s in action in Wales for the men’s home internationals.
