County and City manager Michael Walsh said there is a significant flooding risk in the city expected at 6pm today and there will be a further flooding risk to areas such as the Quays, Poleberry and Millers Marsh Car Park.

Mr Walsh said crews will be on the ground this evening and sandbags are being utilised to build up defences against a significant tidal surge and high tide which has been strengthened by strong south easterly winds.

Mr Walsh said crews will divert traffic and close any flooded roads in the vicinity. At 2pm today the City council closed Poleberry, Poleberry Link Road and Bath Street as they put temporary flood protection measures in place. These areas will remain closed over the coming hours. “The crews have been out today and over the last number of days,” Mr Walsh said. “Across the city we will be carrying out a full assessment during the course of the weekend.”

Motorists are being advised not to drive through flooded roads Waterford City Council can be contacted on 051 309900 or 051 875555
