TRANSITION year students in Presentation Secondary School will take their turn on the stage this week as they follow in the school’s longstanding tradition of performing an annual musical.

Shows have been performed in the school almost every year since 1974 and this year’s musical is Thoroughly Modern Millie, which promises to be yet another crowd pleaser.

The cast and crew comprise of Transition Year students only and singing, dancing and acting rehearsals have been ongoing since September. While last year’s production of ‘Seussical, the Musical’ was performed in the Garter Lane Arts Centre due to the construction of the new Presentation Secondary School building, this year’s show will take place in the newly renovated school gym this Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, February 5 to 7.

Thoroughly Modern Millie is set during the 1920s and tells the story of a small-town girl, Millie Dillmount, played by Hayley O’Brien, who comes to New York City to marry for money instead of love. The talented cast also includes Niamh Browne who plays Millie’s love interest, Jimmy Smith, while Shannon Prendergast takes on the role of Millie’s boss, Trevor Graydon. Laura Hennessy plays the evil owner of Hotel Priscilla, Mrs Meers and Kayleigh Grant is cast as Miss Dorothy Brown, an actress from California and Millie’s best friend. Emily Hearne and Samantha Connolly have been busy brushing up on their Chinese to play the two immigrants, Ching Ho and Bun Foo who work for Mrs Meers at the Hotel Priscilla and Daria Nowosad is singer Muzzy van Hossmere in the production.

The show is directed by speech and drama teacher Mary McNamara, Musical Director is music teacher Mark Scanlon and the show is choreographed by well known dance teacher Pat Grant. The production team is completed with Stage Manager Ann Brennan.

Performances start at 7.30pm each night and tickets are available from the school office (051) 376584. Today, (Tuesday) February 5 is concession night with tickets available at a reduced cost of €8. The cost of tickets on Wednesday and Thursday is €10 each. Group discounts are available for all three nights.
