A MAN who viciously attacked another male, stabbing him in the eye with a screwdriver and causing him brain damage, is to serve four years in prison.

In handing down a seven year sentence, three years of which were suspended, Judge Mary Ellen Ring said the horrific nature of the damage done to the injured party had left his life irrevocably changed.

Luke Rio, with an address at 5 Dominic Court, Bridge Street, pleaded guilty to the assault causing harm of Jonathan Millea who is from Connelly Place in the city. The incident occurred on January 14, 2012 at John Street in Waterford, with the attack resulting in the injured party needing a piece of his skull removed.

In a victim impact statement 23-year-old Jonathan Millea told of the lifechanging effect the vicious assault by Luke Rio had on him, with the Judge referring to his injuries as “chilling”.

In the statement which was read to Waterford Circuit Court last Thursday, the young man revealed how he felt like a constant burden on his family and said, “the routine of life is now an ordeal” for him.

Flanked by members of his loving and supportive family in court, Mr Millea revealed how simple tasks such as shaving or lifting up his young child are now a struggle and he feels he will “never again regain the full and happy life he once knew”.
